Moxibustion or Moxa burns a herb called Artemis Vulgaris or ‘mugwort’ on or near an Acupuncture point to warm the body, increasing both yin and blood flow within the body. The warming and energetic properties of the mugwort leaf is used to improve circulation, warm and relax tense muscles, relieve pain and promote relaxation and wellbeing as well as influence the movement of Qi and blood within the meridians.
Moxibustion is commonly performed in 2 ways. Direct or indirectly.
Moxibustion is often used to treat painful muscle conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia as it disperses cold and damp which make these conditions worse. It can also benefit chest conditions such as bronchitis, asthma and cystic fibrosis for the same reasons.
It has been found very beneficial for warming up the abdomen easing digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome IBS and period pain; it helps in painful menstrual conditions such as endometriosis and poly cystic ovarian syndrome PCOS.
additionally its been used for poor blood circulation and cold-based conditions such as Raynaud's syndrome.
Western scientific research has found that moxa can stimulate the blood flow in the uterus and pelvic area, also having been used for many years in the turning of breech babies.
Moxibustion is most famous use is in turning breech babies naturally. The Chinese believe that we waft a lit Moxa cone along bladder meridian on the toe and the smoke enters the channel goes up to the womb and causing the baby to cough and turn around to get away from the smoke. I’m not convinced, but it does have a 89% success rate in turning breech babies with 0% side effects or risks while manual manipulation (External Cephalic Version) has a 50% success rate can be very uncomfortable and does carry some risks to mother and baby of placenta abruption.
Once lit, moxa burns very slowly and the whole process is carefully monitored with your safety being of the utmost importance at all times, if at any point it feels too hot please communicate this immediately with the practitioner.
Moxibustion IS NOT RECCOMENDED IN HEAT-RELATED CONDTIONS.
